Pine Ridge: A Pearl Neighborhood

Pine Ridge is proud to be the first certified Pearl Neighborhood in Virginia Beach—a milestone that reflects our community’s long-standing commitment to environmental stewardship and responsible living.

Being a Pearl Neighborhood means our residents care deeply about protecting our waterways, preserving natural resources, and making everyday choices that positively impact our environment. From small daily habits to larger community projects, Pine Ridge neighbors continue to lead by example.

What Is a Pearl Home?

Pearl Homes are households that take simple, meaningful steps to live more sustainably and help protect our local waterways. These efforts—big or small—add up to real change.

Examples include:

• Installing a rain garden or rain barrel

• Using reusable water bottles and grocery bags

• Properly disposing of pet waste (“Scoop the Poop”)

• Reducing runoff and pollution through eco-friendly practices

Every action helps restore and protect our waterways—and together, these efforts make Pine Ridge stronger and more resilient.

Pearl Neighborhood Certification Requirements

To earn and maintain Pearl Neighborhood certification, Pine Ridge must meet the following criteria:

• Provide a Lynnhaven River NOW educational opportunity for residents
  (Previously hosted at Spring Civic League Meetings and Garden Club events in 2018)

• Achieve Pearl Home designation for at least 30% of neighborhood homes
  (80 of 266 homes)

• Complete at least one environmentally focused community project, such as:

  • Rain or pollinator gardens

  • Native plantings

  • Community gardens

  (Example: Native tree planting at the Pine Ridge front entrance – Spring 2019)

How You Can Become a Pearl Home

Becoming a Pearl Home is easy and impactful.

1. Complete a Pearl Home application (paper or online via Lynnhaven River NOW)

2. Qualifying homes will receive a free Pearl Home garden flag

3. Your address will count toward Pine Ridge’s 30% certification goal

Once we reach 80 Pearl Homes, Pine Ridge will be recognized with a Pearl Neighborhood banner—a visible symbol of our community’s commitment to sustainability.
